Crazy wind and cold again. We left this morning for the Going-to-the-Sun Road. The road is closed at Logan Pass due to avalanches and additional snow from the past few days. We can only drive about a third of the way. Better than not being able to drive it at all. I know we missed a lot due to the weather, but that was the only reservation I could get. Someone canceled right before I called last year on November 25th.
The Going-to-the-Sun Road was beautiful, with many pullouts and trailheads. We decided to stop and hike the Gunsight Trail. It was only a 1.3-mile trail, one way. We hiked for about half an hour, going downhill the entire time. It was a pretty good, steep trail. I was concerned about going back up, so we decided to head back up the trail. We did slowly due to Barry’s knee. It was still a beautiful hike, and I captured some great photos of wildflowers.
We decided to have lunch at the Rising Sun Picnic area. We found a partly shaded picnic table and enjoyed our lunch while keeping a lookout in all directions for bears. Barry found a great hiking stick and has carving plans for it.
We took our time on our return drive and stopped by the St. Mary Lodge again for pretzel bites and a cocktail. We met a couple of gentlemen from the Portland, Oregon area. We shared some of our trips with each other, and then we went back to camp.
On the way back to camp, we decided to take the road to the right from the KOA for a side excursion. It went around the west side of Lower Saint Mary Lake and was all gravel. There were lots of private homes. We tried a few that were not marked, but they still led to a private home. We didn’t see many that were occupied. It was an interesting and fun drive. The road was about ten miles and ended at Babb.
Dinner was leftovers. Barry made cookies in the convection microwave for the first time, and they came out delicious.
Great day! Night all.
