05-13-2025, Florida Key West Trip 3/27 – 6/30 2025, 96 Days, 7986 Miles, 44 Stops

13 May 2025, The Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory, Key West, Florida

Today, we visited the Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory. We parked right across the street. I took a few photos of houses before we went to the Conservatory.

Once inside, you go into a room that gives you some history about butterflies, which is cool. Entering the room with all the butterflies, you have to go through double doors so the butterflies don’t escape. What a beautiful treat. There are flowers blooming and butterflies everywhere. Some of them blend in with the foliage, and you don’t see them until they move. It’s like a giant greenhouse. There are colorful birds, too. Two flamingos also live in the greenhouse, Rhett and Scarlett. They are very vocal. They are comical to watch. The pond has beautiful blue fish. I don’t remember the name. At the end, before you go out, there are windows with live chrysalis. Some butterflies have just hatched and are drying their wings. I loved this area and learning about the process a butterfly goes through. There was also a gecko that was 18 years old when they found it in the area during the Conservatory’s construction.

To leave, you have to go through another set of double doors. Once through the first one, you have to check a mirror to ensure you have no hitchhikers, and then you can exit. It was a wonderful experience.

From here, we went to West Marine to see if they had beach chairs. We wanted a set before we went to the beach again. We found a pair and purchased them.

We decided to have a late lunch, and Louie’s Backyard was a recommendation from someone at the Butterfly place. What a great setting. Right on Dog Beach. This is my favorite restaurant so far. The Key Lime Pie was superb and my favorite. Barry bought the chef’s cookbook, and we are excited to try some of the recipes when we get home to Oregon.
