05-06-2025, Florida Key West Trip 3/27 – 6/30 2025, 96 Days, 7986 Miles, 44 Stops
06 May 2025, Keys Palm Luxury RV Resort, Key Largo, Florida to Boyd’s Key West Campground, Key West, Florida
I was sad to leave Key Largo this morning, but I am excited for Key West. The drive was nice except for a bit of road construction. Key West is the southernmost destination we are visiting on this trip.
The water is a beautiful teal blue, and it is visible on both sides of Highway 1 for most of its length. The highway is at a twenty-foot elevation.
There were so many restaurants, resorts, yachts, and boat dealers, as well as a dolphin research center, a bird sanctuary, museums, and people fishing off the bridges. What I loved most were the pink flamingo and manatee mailboxes along the residential areas of the highway.
I have noticed no flowers, even in front of buildings or restaurants.
One of the fish we want to try is conch. Well, I guess it’s not a fish but a snail.
We made it to Boyd’s RV Campground. We are close to the water, but not directly next to it; however, we can see it from our campsite. There is a smell here that we didn’t have at Key Largo. The people at the office said it is the seaweed and comes and goes. The Reynolds are across the street and two sites down. Several roosters and chickens roam free around the campground and are unafraid of humans. They are very vocal, hopefully not at 6:00 AM. We also saw two iguanas by our campsite. Each was about two to three feet long.
We climbed into J&K’s jeep and headed into town to find a place to eat. We ended up at the Boat House at Turtle Kraals. Great place. Our table was on the edge of the open-air restaurant. On the other side of the dock were a couple of fellas cleaning fish they caught. They would throw the pieces they did not want into the water, and tarpon would swarm for them. Fun to watch. Tarpons can get up to eight feet long, but most are no longer than four or five feet. Our food and drinks were superb.
Jan and I went into a boutique next door called Local Color and bought numerous items. We loved this shop. We met up with our guys at Half Shell Raw Bar, across from the restaurant and Local Color. The guys met this couple, Jason and Kelly, while they were in the bar, and we all clicked well. We continued to have drinks with them and got to know them better. They live in northern Florida, and we had a great time with them. After we left there, we met up with them at Mr. Z’s for French fries. I do not know how Jan and I managed to eat French fries, but they were excellent.
We drove down Duval Street, the main drag of Key West, on the way home. We saw so many shops and decided it would take us a day and a half to walk this street.
Successful first day in Key West.
