09-11-2026 Muir Woods National Monument
Today is 9/11, and I want to pay homage to those who lost their lives during that horrific day. I still remember I was driving to work when I heard the news on the radio. It was an awful sinking feeling. May they all Rest In Peace.
Today, we headed to Muir Woods National Monument. This is another park we are looking forward to visiting. Lisa picked me up and Barry drove the RV to Dumbarton Quarry RV Park in Newark, California. He was a little nervous but made it just fine. The only thing was that on 880 he hit a bump that knocked all the clothes off the rod in our closet. It didn't knock the rod off, just the clothes. Very weird.
The drive to Muir Woods was only about thirty minutes from Marin RV Park. This RV park turned out to be very convenient for a lot of what Lisa and I planned. If you go, just know you need a parking reservation. We were directed to a lot about a five-minute walk from the visitor center, so it was perfect.
We hiked the lower Redwood Creek Trail to Bohemian Grove Trail, to Hillside Trail, across Bridge 4 to the upper Redwood Creek Trail, and followed it back to the visitor center. This hike is very easy.
Beautiful hike, but there were more people than we anticipated. The park brochure says to enter Cathedral Grove quietly, but most people don't...very disappointing. There are even signs to do so. We stopped at Bridge 3 and ate our lunch. We sat on the bridge rails as we ate. It was a great spot to enjoy lunch. We got someone to take our photo.
By Bridge 2, there was a sign that Coho Fingerlings have been spotted by the bridge. We walked to the middle of the bridge and we located two in the water. Tiny little guys.
Oh! And there is poison oak, so beware. It was starting to turn red, which made it easy to spot.
It was hard to spot birds because they flitted through the tops of the redwoods and they were fast. Per my Merlin app, we did hear the following:
- Red-shouldered Hawk
- Pacific Wren
- Common Ravens
We didn't see any animals, not even squirrels, but there were a lot of people.
The gift shop was very busy. I purchased a lightweight jacket and a Christmas ornament.
The drive back was uneventful. Lisa dropped me off at El Cerrito del Norte BART station, and I rode the train to Fremont. Barry picked me up. We were both hungry and decided to drive to Castro Valley to one of our favorite restaurants, Genghix, for sashimi and a dragon roll. We do miss their food. We love this place.
