06-10-2026 Wednesday, Sophia Springs Camp Ground, Hot Springs, Montana
The drive from Kalispell/Whitefish KOA was along Flathead Lake. This is a huge lake, with lots of small towns along the drive. They all looked like great little communities.
Hot Springs is a very small town, with a population of only 200, according to the last census. It was a destination in the early 20s and 30s for their hot springs. Thought we would be able to relax for the next few days and enjoy some of the hot springs...not so much. We pulled into Sophis Hot Springs, and the site we were told in our email to park in was taken. The park has only eight sites and is in the middle of a neighborhood. Barry called the number we had and left a message. We waited for a few minutes for a return call. We thought maybe we had the wrong address. He unhooked the jeep and drove around the block looking for the office. When he got back to the sites, a woman flagged him down, and she happened to be the owner. The person on our site decided to stay for another month, so we were moved to a concrete pad next to the laundry and showers. We barely fit, but it was doable for one night.
Back to the hot springs. It was a pipe with running water from the spring flowing into an old hot tub with a broken cover. There was no electricity, and it was used just for the tub. Better than that, it was behind a fenced-in area in a small field... LOL... no way were we using that. So much for relaxing.
Instead, we headed into what was the downtown area to see what was there. We went into a second-hand store, and I did find a beautiful beaded bracelet that I bought. There was also a Do It Center hardware store. This was the same store that we went to in West Yellowstone. Of course, we went in, and I immediately found the tissue paper I needed for Emery’s gift. Pretty lucky.
The town also had a state liquor store (we bought margarita mix), a grocery store (bananas), a few bars, and a nice coffee house. We ended up eating at Louie’s Place, which was a converted garage used to fix cars. It had a lot of character. I posted photos below. The food was OK.
Back to Julie for showers, map our route for tomorrow, then bed.
These signs were along the route to Hot Springs. Hot Spring needs all the help it can get to entice you.
I love this "chandelier."
Great way to display a model collection.
Nice outdoor area.
