06-04-26 Shelby, Montana to Glacier National Park, Montana

It’s windy again this morning. We were hoping it would calm down before we left, but no luck. The entire drive was windy and stressed Barry out. There was not much traffic on the way, which was great. At times, the wind gusts slammed into Julie’s side, and we would be forced into the oncoming lane. Not a fun drive.

We arrived at St. Mary around 12:30 PM. We are staying in the St. Mary/East Glacier KOA Holiday. It’s on the Blackfeet reservation. The park is beautiful with a very nice pool area, but it’s not open yet. I wished the jacuzzi were running. They also have three hot tubs, but they are not open either. Our site is awesome. We have a private patio, and no one on the patio side. We have a full view of the mountains. We could not ask for anything better.

We had a problem leveling Julie, but we resolved it. Once that was done, we piled in the jeep and drove to the St. Mary Visitor Center. It’s only five minutes down the road.

A very nice center and a museum about the Blackfeet and other tribes: the Blackfeet have a large reservation here. There is a small screen inside a makeshift teepee. It’s playing a video with elders talking about the Blackfeet people and how they relate to nature, animals, and plants. Their stories are handed down verbally through the generations. Passport stamps were by the ranger’s desk. They also had a 250th anniversary stamp, so I was excited.

In the store, we purchased passport stickers, t-shirts, Images of America Glacier National Park, and a bookmark. I also purchased another book at the sports store next door, Quotation Book: Our National Parks.

We were hungry, as we had not eaten since we left Shelby. We decided to check out the restaurant at the St. Mary Lodge. We ended up in the bar area. We could order food but not drinks. Since it’s on the Blackfeet Reservation, there's a law that alcohol isn't served between 8 and 5, when the kids are in school. You can’t buy it at a store either. It was 4:00 PM, and no problem. We would order appetizers and root beer. We paid our tab and went to the sports store next door. We roamed around for a bit, and as mentioned before, I bought the Quotation book there.

By the time we finished with that, it was a few minutes before 5:00 PM, so we walked back over to the bar area in the hotel and decided to have dinner in there instead of the dining room. Barry had bison meatloaf, and I had roasted chicken. The vegetable was asparagus, and it was yummy. They get their veggies from the Amish in the area. We had no idea there was an Amish society this far north.

The asparagus was small and tender. Both our meals were delicious, along with the Huckleberry shortcake we had for dessert. The shortcake was made in the old-fashioned style. Similar to a shortcake I used to make with Bisquick. The whipped cream tasted like real whipped cream, so yummy. OK...we were stuffed. Back to Julie to get caught up on blogging and what we are going to do tomorrow.

I did a little Google research and found an Amish community in Browning, MT, about 30 miles southeast of the St. Mary area. Maybe this is where the St. Mary Lodge restaurant gets its fresh veges from—just a guess on my part.

We could not ask for a better view from our RV.

I could't help myself from taking another plant photo. This is s bleeding Heart. I have never
seen one this big. It was about 3 ft. wide and 2 ft. deep.
