05-29-2025, Florida Key West Trip 3/27 – 6/30 2025, 96 Days, 7986 Miles, 44 Stops

29 May 2025, Andersonville, Georgia to
Oak Mountain State Park, Alabama

Jeeps- 2

We were up early. We needed to meet Cynthia Stormcaller at the Little Drummer Boy Museum to pay our Campground fee before we left this morning. She is the Curator of the museum, as well as the Director of Tourism for Andersonville. She also does tours at Andersonville National Cemetery and Park. Very knowledgeable about the area.

The museum is a treasure trove of original artifacts from the Civil War. The uniform display is a notable highlight. There are artifacts from Gettysburg, Shiloh, Andersonville, and other notable battles. There is a mannequin dressed in a full silk dress with the history behind it posted in front of it. All the displays feature a history of each piece. My favorite uniform was the Zouave Drummer Boy uniform. The uniform is in excellent condition. According to the card, there is only one other known uniform in the Little White House Museum in Richmond, Virginia. Another favorite was Mary Surratt’s bonnet, which was removed from her head after she was hanged. I’ve only included a few items from this fantastic collection in the photos below.

The museum is a must-see for every Civil War buff or historian. They can use all the help they can get from donations and word of mouth. They have limited hours, so check before visiting.

Just as we got ready to leave today, it started pouring again. I went and said bye to Kay, and we were off. I will miss waking up to the sound of cardinals in the morning. I haven’t mentioned how clean all these towns in the area are. We didn’t see litter anywhere. The homes are beautifully manicured and well-maintained. It’s nice to see how much people take pride in their property.

We crossed over into Alabama at 12:20 PM, and it rained until we were on the outskirts of Montgomery. Blue skies were a welcome sight.

We arrived at Oak Mountain State Park around 4:00 PM. We checked in at the office, and the person assisting us informed us of the incorrect way to access our campsite. We had to disconnect the jeep, and Barry drove to an area where he could turn the rig around and come in correctly; I’m so glad it wasn’t raining. Once set up, we sat on our picnic table with a beer and enjoyed the weather. I was happy to see Cardinals again.

The park has a BMX and pump track, so we decided to check it out. Both tracks are nice, and I took videos for Tucker. The park also has a lake, hiking trails, an archery area, tent sites, and I’m not sure what else. We discussed coming back in the future, but we need to research how far any National Park sites are.

Barry made Turkey burgers for dinner, and they were delicious.
