24 May 2025, St. Augustine Beach KOA Holiday, St. Augustine, Florida
It was a three-and-a-half-hour drive from Summer Crush Winery to the KOA in St. Augustine. We arrived around noon, checked in and parked our RV at our site. We were hungry, so I made sandwiches. Once we finished lunch, we took off for
Fort Matanzas National Monument. It was about fourteen miles south.
We arrived in time for the 2:30 ferry over to the fort. A volunteer gave us information about the fort and the national park system. We boarded our ferry for the five-minute ride across the water. During our ride, a ranger gave us additional information about the fort. The fort was completed in 1742 to defend the southernmost point of St. Augustine. No more than seven men manned the fort during its heyday. At that time, the island was only about two miles in diameter. We got to climb up onto the fort and even up to the third level. What a great time. I love learning about the history of the areas we visit.
Since it was a holiday weekend, this area of the waterways was busy with boaters. It was a little crazy but having the rangers on the water seemed to keep everyone in line.
After we visited the fort, we texted J&K to see where they were. Today is our last day traveling with them. Tomorrow, we both head in different directions.
They were in St. Augustine’s Historic Downtown Area. We drove to the area and parked in a lot. We hooked up with J&K on St. George Street. The first stop was a bar for a drink; then, we shopped in some of the stores on the street.
St. George Street is a pedestrian-friendly street with numerous shops, eateries, and a few museums—a fun area.
We decided to go to the
Salt Life Food Shack for dinner. It was close to the beach. What a great place. We ate upstairs, outside, with a view of the ocean. There was a live band playing oldies, and we enjoyed them. Our food and drinks were excellent.
I overate even though I ended up with a doggy bag. Again, a nice way to end our day.
