2023-09-17 Sunday, Oregon Trip to Visit Family and Friends

Ryan and Amanda’s Home
Steps – 4,066

The area was smokey due to the fires. The temperature was 85º, which made it worse. Today is a utility day. Amanda made an excellent scramble for breakfast.

Tucker’s new BMX bike came yesterday, and today was assembly day. His dad helped him assemble it, with Uncle B overseeing the task. Ryan taught Tucker a few things about his bike he needs to be aware of, like tire pressure and keeping the chain clean. Tucker could not wait to ride it. This bike is for the street and pump track only. His other bike he can use on his dirt track at home.

We decided on pizza for dinner, so Barry went for gas, groceries, pizza dough, and toppings. I stayed home and did laundry. He could only find wheat pizza dough. Everyone made their own pizza and loved the wheat dough. The kids had a great time.

After dinner and pizza clean-up, we had a rousing game of Sequence. The teams were Barry and I, Tucker and Ryan, and Amanda and Addison. The last time we played Sequence with this group was when we all went to the coast in February 2022. We saw the other side of Amanda’s personality and how competitive she is at games, especially this one. This time, she promised to be a bit more subdued.

Ryan would get upset with Tucker because he felt Tucker was not paying attention. Ryan would do his best to get Tucker to pay attention and try to hint to him, without being too obvious...right!
Tucker kept saying, “We got this, Dad. Don’t worry.” This is a nine-year-old that cannot stay still. But in the end, Tucker would make his play and Ryan and he would win the game! I swear that kid can read the board and remember what everyone plays.

Night All.

2023 - 09 -16 Oregon Trip to Visit Family and Friends

2023-09-16 Oregon Trip to Visit Family and Friends
John Day Fossil Beds National Monument
Ryan and Amanda's Place
Steps – 9,006

Playing with our shadows

Up early, packed a lunch, and was on the road by 7:30 AM. John Day Fossil Beds National Monument, here we come. It was a two-hour drive to the park. It is on the eastern side of Oregon—Tucker decided to go with us.

The road was through the mountains. This is a volcanic area that was once underwater. Volcanic rock is everywhere and looks desolate.

Our first stop was the Painted Hills. The hills have a different color for each period after the dinosaurs went extinct. The colors were gold, yellows, browns, and reds. We hiked three trails around the hills. Each hike was short, but we had better views of the painted hills.

We ate lunch in a nice picnic area with plenty of shade trees. I'm glad we got here early this morning. Today's temperature was around 97º and would have been too hot to hike. After lunch, we drove an hour to the Thomas Condon Visitor Center.

The visitor center has a great display of the fossils found in the area. This area is post dinosaurs. It was a swamp area, so most fossils are fauna and marine life. We enjoyed the exhibits. Tucker's favorite was the bear wolf mural. I found the place to get my passport stamps and buy stickers.

After the visitor center, Ryan, Amanda, and Addison headed home because they had to feed the horses. Barry, Tucker, and I drove to the Cant Ranch House. We toured the house and displays, then walked to the grounds and the barn. The Cants were born in Scotland and bought the ranch in 1910. The original homestead was established in 1890. I do not remember the names of the original owners. The history includes the cattle and sheep wars over the grazing lands.

As we walked to the barn, we saw a coyote with an apple in his mouth about seventy-five feet in front of us. He did not seem too concerned with us and slowly wandered away. The property has apple, pear, and apricot trees.

The barn was used to house sheep having newborns and for shearing the sheep. The barn is huge with small corrals. Outside was the area where they would do the shearing. It was an interesting setup, and Barry and Tucker had a great time playing with what was hanging around and used for sheep shearing.

After the boys were done playing, we headed back to the Jeep. As we got into the Jeep, a tour bus pulled in behind us. We put the Jeep in reverse, and at about that time, the bus started pulling into the parking spot next to us. Wholly sh**, the bus will hit us on the driver's side back corner. Tucker was on that side, and I told him to move to my side. I quickly got out, ran over to the bus, and was pounding on it to stop. In addition, Barry was honking the horn and yelling at them. The tour bus was so close to us that Barry could not open his door.

The tour director is calling someone to tell her what to do...just turn away from us and back up, Idiot! Tucker heard words out of me he had not before. The tour director was a total idiot. They finally figured out how to get the bus away from our Jeep. Luckily, there was minimal damage to the license plate and license place cover. The damage could have been much worse had we not reacted so quickly. I was more worried about Tucker, but he seemed to be OK. He told us he was sending a text to his mom, "We were hit by a bus," but it did not go through since there was a lack of cell phone coverage. Barry and I said, "No, don't send that!" We then had to explain how his mom would have reacted to a text like that. It was a funny conversation explaining why that was not a good idea. We decided to wait until we were all at dinner and he could tell his version of what happened. He liked that idea.

The ride home was a little stressful. Barry said we needed gas but would not hit Prineville for a while. We were driving on fumes! We had two miles left on the tank as we pulled into the gas station, 400 miles on a tank, and 398.7 miles showing—more for Tucker to share at dinner. We told him his mom would not let him go with us after today.

After getting gas, we noticed smoke was coming in and covering the Powell Butte Valley. It was thick and from one of the fires. The valley was clear, and suddenly, it was filled with smoke.

We made it home and then off to Diego's Spirited Kitchen for Mexican dinner. Tucker road with his family in their truck, and when we got to the restaurant, everyone said he kept dropping hints, but he did not spill it.

We had to wait for a table, and Ryan bought Amanda and me the "special margarita." Wholly cow was it strong, but after today, I needed it. Once we sat down, we told Tucker he could tell everyone what happened. He could not wait to spill the beans, even the part about us not wanting him to text his mom. We all had a great laugh listening to Tucker.

Great food, drinks, and, of course, company. It was a great day, and we all had fun.

Hope your dreams are filled with painted hills colors.

A few days later, Amanda sent me this short story Tucker wrote about our day. He permitted me to post it on my blog....thank you, Tucker.

Goofy Addison

Amanda and Addison made breakfast/brunch: bacon, eggs (from her chickens), pancakes, potatoes, and strawberries. It was yummy. A lazy day for us. We did not do much. Tucker rode his bike on his pump track, Barry taught Tucker how to play frisbee, and I played with the dogs, Nalu and Lindy.

Ryan returned home from work, and we headed to Bend. Our destination was Deschutes Brewery—one of our favorite places to eat in this area. We were lucky enough to find close parking. Barry and I found tee shirts; our old ones are falling apart. Dinner was awesome.

Once home, we played UNO, a favorite of everyone. Playing with Tucker and Addison was so much fun. We ensured they did not sit by each other this time—no cheating in this game. We played two rounds, and Tucker won a game, and so did I.

Siri Questions - I'm sure there were more, but I can't remember
1. What is the sea level of Powell Butte?
2. What is the population of Powell Butte?
3. What are the hours of Deschutes Brewery?
4. How long do chickens live?

We did not play UNO too late since tomorrow is our trip to John Day Fossil Beds National Monument.

2023-09-14 Oregon Trip to Visit Family and Friends

Ryan and Amanda’s
Steps – 2,532

Addison and Josey

Today, the kids have guitar lessons in the morning. When they get home, we will visit the horses.

I did laundry, Barry paid bills, and we both caught up on email. We still have to keep up with home stuff when traveling.

The kids returned home, changed, and we walked to the horses. Their next-door neighbors, Chuck and Jan, are where the horses are kept. Chuck has a forty-year career with horses and rodeo. Chuck has taught Addison and Tucker how to ride and care for the horses. He loves the kids like grandkids. They are very lucky to have Chuck and Jan as neighbors.

When Chuck started working with Addison, she tried riding Chuck’s other horse, Pistol. He was his namesake. He bucked off Jan and took off bucking with Addy. She only had one foot in the stirrup and pushed and jumped off before he got very far. After this incident, Ryan and Amanda partnered with Chuck and Jan and traded Pistol for another horse. Her name is Josey.

Josey has been great with Addison, and they have bonded. Addison has worked with her, and you can tell. Amanda says Josey has gained more muscle since Addison is training with her. I don’t know much about horses, but Josey is pretty and muscular.

Addison ran her barrels a few times with Josey. It was fun to see her in person rather than via Zoom or videos.

Tucker is starting to ride now, and today he rode Red. Red was following directions, but he soon got tired and decided he wanted to stay in the shade. Tucker could not get him to move. Amanda had to get Red to move. He certainly has a mind of his own.

Tucker got on the back of Josey with Addison, and they walked around the ring to cool Josey down. He looked like he was having more fun than when he was on Red.

After horses, Tucker wanted to take his Uncle, walk the property, and show him a particular tree. It is Tucker’s climbing tree, and someone tried to build a tree house but failed. He took Uncle B around the property and showed him the property lines. They came back and seemed to have a great time.

Dinner tonight was “Smashed Elk Burgers.” The meat was from the elk Addison shot last month, her first elk. Ryan and Amanda showed Barry how to cook “smash burgers.” It was hysterical listening to all three of them trying to cook the burgers and telling each other what to do!

After dinner,  we played Tucker’s favorite game, Clue. I cannot remember the last time I played Clue. Barry does not like to play games, but the whole family is playing, so he has no choice. The first thing was to tell us how to play. That was comical. Once we started playing, it was a challenge for him and me. In the end, Tucker won. But then, about one minute later, we find out that Tucker and Addison cheated. The two of them were sitting next to each other, and I was sitting next to Addison. I had no idea. Tucker could not keep it a secret and blurted out they were cheating. Addison was not happy he spilled the beans. We all laughed and said they were not allowed to sit next to each other when we play another game. I still can not believe none of us caught on.

Good Night, All.

2023-09-13 Oregon Trip to Visit Family and Friends

Crater Lake, Oregon, to Ryan and Amanda's
Steps – 4,684
Drive Miles /Hours– 120/3 hours

Travel day to Ryan and Amanda's. I was so excited to see them. While getting ready this morning, Barry left the garbage bag outside to add more, and one of the squirrels got into the bag. It grabbed the avocado seed, took it behind our Jeep, and ate a part of it. Gave us a good laugh! I wish I'd seen the squirrel carry it. The avocado seed might have been larger than the squirrel.

Even though this is a chewed-up avocado seed,
it looks like a chicken's head

We packed up the RV and headed out around 10:30 AM. We did not hook up the Jeep because getting out of the RV park was a little narrow. I followed Barry out of the park. We stopped just outside the park, and I put the Jeep flashers on to be safe since we stuck out on the road a bit. Barry hooked up the Jeep, and we were off.

It was a good drive with minimal construction areas, something we always worry about. We arrived around 3:00 PM, and everyone was home. When Barry was unhooking the Jeep, he discovered the emergency flashers were left on, and the battery was dead. We traveled from Crater Lake with them on. He pulled out his charger and got it running again. Ryan instructed us where to park, and he helped his Uncle B set up power, water, and sewer. The sewer hookup Ryan installed once we confirmed we were coming. Thank you, Ryan! Julie was all hooked up and settled in for the week.

Home for the next week.

We got a tour of the house, the chicken coop, the new barn, Tucker's pump track, and the outlying property. They live on six acres. The last time we were visiting them, they lived in Redmond. This house they built. It is a beautiful home, and they are so proud of all the work they have done and should be.

I buy all the families a Halloween movable something every year. Instead of shipping it this year, I brought it. Tucker has such an imagination. He took the tissue paper from the package, made a cape over his head, and attached it to his hat and long pointy fingers. Below is the finished product, and we were just cracking up.

We watched Tucker ride his bike on his pump track before dinner. He was so excited to show us. He has so much nerve. But at nine years old, it is all about how fast and how high you can go, and he does both with no fear! He and I also went out to the road so he could show me how he jumped his ramp. With this kid, it is all about the pump track and his bike.

Ryan and Amanda cooked BBQ chicken kabobs for dinner, and they were delicious. It was fantastic to have dinner with family. There was much chatter during dinner, catching up with everything.

Off to bed, and tomorrow we are going across the road to see the horses and the kids ride. Addison has started competing in barrel racing. The past weekend, she earned her first blue ribbon.

Hope you have blue ribbon dreams.
